Our First Design + Build Skatepark Contract is Complete
It took a few years for us to be awarded our first full design/build contract, but we're finally here.
A few years ago, we started a skatepark design and construction business. This month, our first design/build contract is officially a wrap in Hayden, Colorado, with our build partner, Phantom Concrete.
Part of what has kept The Boardr alive through ups and huge downs like the pandemic is our multiple revenue streams, among other things. It’s the business textbook advice for being prepared to navigate stormy waters.
While we don’t exactly follow textbook business, we do particularly enjoy this skateboarding work, so we tend not to shy away from an opportunity.
When long-time park designer Tito Porrata (Miami’s Lot 11 designer, plus hundreds of other parks) expressed interest in possibly doing his own thing, we raised our hand and said, “Let us do all the boring parts like accounting, management, and tedious box checking so you can work your magic.”
It took us two years to convince him to take the big risk and jump ship, which finally happened in 2021. We made up a basic-ass-grown-up sounding business name and Platform Group was born as a division of The Boardr.
We’re excited to share the design, progress, and finished product from Hayden, and hope you make it there one day on a cross-country skateboarding road trip that should be on everyone’s short term list of to-do’s.
We’ve won some newer design/build jobs right here in Florida recently, too, including Ocala and Marathon, Florida. More on those as they unfold.
The Event Horizon
Red Bull Boarding Pass has three stops this year with New York on June 14 less than a month away. We’ve got Atlanta on June 28th and Portland on July 12. This one’s a team vs team invite contest where winning teams go to Red Bull Ensemble. Check out a bit of the scene from a recent Boarding Pass:
Des Moines Streetstyle Open
There’s no schedule yet for the 5th Annual Des Moines Streetstyle Open, but we have put a solid 40+ hours of work into getting it dialed, and it’s still not ready yet. You’ll see why when it gets published. Some exciting things are brewing there, but we have some complexities to work out first. The dates have been set for August 27 - 30. Take a look at Chris Roberts’ experience from last year to see some of what you’re in for.
From Ryan in the Excel Management division:
Since Skullcandy has stepped back in the game and is doing cool shit, I’ve been hit up by our clients, and friends that are not clients, to see if they can be a part of it. I remember a few years ago when SKDY first reached out to us about Nora. It took a few months, but we figured it out, and Nora has been on since. Skullcandy has great people behind-the-scenes running the brand, which is why The Boardr is involved with their Crusher Cup at Kilby Block Party.
“You’re an agent?”
Excel clients Felipe Gustavo and Sora Shira were both confirmed for the X Games Osaka. Check that one and others on our Industry Events List.
