The Full Circle Skateboard Story of Irmo, South Carolina

The skateboarding scene in Irmo, South Carolina, is very healthy, and we're pretty proud of how we played our small part in helping that evolve.

It all started when a local advocate in the community, Marie, got the resources allocated for the skatepark to be built. Once Marie’s efforts got some traction, it was time for the town to find the right people to design and build.

We assisted with the design through Platform Group, our division here at The Boardr that does skatepark design and construction. Then, our friends at 5th Pocket Skateparks did the build.

It’s so good to see communities getting skateparks built, but just building is only the first step.

Marie knew that now that the community had a proper facility, activating it with regular programming and events is what would complete the full return on the town’s investment.

Marie approached the town to have a professionally run event, got in touch with The Boardr, and then raised money through sponsorships.

The Town of Irmo kicked in the rest, and just a few months later, we were on site to execute the event.

Irmo is just getting started with its skateboarding story, and we’re excited to already have 2026's stop on the books and confirmed!

The feel-good moment of the contest was witnessing excited new skateboarders being created, as you saw in our last newsletter with Yi’mir. It’s great to see that video with 700k views on YouTube and all those comments.

The story of Irmo is what we’re shooting for in every community out there:

Build proper parks for the existing skaters and introduce new ones through activations and events to keep them skateboarding for life.

Then all those damn bar charts I keep making will go up instead of down by the time we hit the 2030’s.

We’ll be in Salt Lake City Next Month

We’re doing more and more skateboarding events at music festivals. We’re returning to the Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake City in mid-May for the Skullcandy Crusher Cup. The event has an Open Qualifiers portion that anyone can get in on.

The main event is team vs team format involving both the street and park courses, so you get to see some pretty entertaining fish-out-of-water-type skateboarding go down from your favorite pros.

Nora, Jake Anderson, and Andrew Reynolds are a few of the team captains.

You know it’s fancy when Dre poses in front of the step and repeat.

Find out more about where we’ll be next at our full events list.

That’s it for now, see you around out there on the wood and wheels.
