Tony Hawk Pro Skater vs IRL Pro Skater

What a time we had executing Red Bull Pin Drop, where THPS gamers were paired-up with skaters like Jamie Foy and Jake Yanko, for a first-of-its-kind-contest.

After a few decades of running events, contest logistics is almost an after-thought for us at this point. We had plenty of meetings and preparation as usual for Red Bull Pin Drop, with a focus on creating the unique format. A gamer and a skater were paired up as a team. The gamer’s score on THPS, and the skater’s score from a run on the new street course, were combined in real time for an overall team score.

This one was quite a fulfilling skateboard job with all the new things we had to plan and execute. First, we designed and built the new street course additions. Another unique aspect of this project were the "Hidden Challenges.” For this part we mimicked features of THPS in real life. There was a Secret Tape and hidden pads, and we created a custom app to track finding the letters to S-K-A-T-E all around Kona.

For the collecting S-K-A-T-E app, we hid QR codes around the park that kids could scan when they find them. We built a leaderboard that showed the progress of everyone finding letters. The first few people to find all letters got a great prize pack at the end of the day, including a Tony Hawk-signed deck.

Around here, when someone says, “We need a new deck,” it doesn’t mean we’re going skating. It means we’re going presenting. Have a look at some of the slides from our super corpo presentation deck on how it works below.

Here’s how the final leaderboard ended up from people playing on site. 16 people found all five letters and 50 people played the game.

As for the missing pads and Secret Tape from THPS, we had those hidden around the park that could be brought in for prizes also.

Boomers told me you hold it up to your ear and sounds come out of one end while you talk into the other end.

Red Bull has a few clips of the ripping skating in this Short.

Here’s how it ended up going down before the rain shut us out.

One last thing on this event. The turnout blew us away. What a healthy scene in and around Jacksonville. Thanks to everyone who made it!
